So, let's get started on this. What's the name of the VN? What is the main colour theme going to be? Blue because it s underwater? I don't know how to deal with renpy, so it'd be great if those with experience ( sanimeaotakuo) can tell me what is needed. After reading this, I don't see how I can help. It seems like there are themes to adhere to, which are built in to renpy. Will research more.

The Ren'py user interface should be customizable; we just need to make the proper buttons and borders. If you have any concept ideas, draw a quick sketch! Ideally, I'd like to use a 5:9 aspect ratio. The interface can be anything as simple as this: linkA bit more fancy like this: linkOr even more fancy like this: link <- Hey look it's mai waifu

We can do 5:9. I don't actually have any experience with ren'py, but I took an intro to comprog last year, and I learned it all very quickly and it makes sense to me. We don't know the name for sure, but our current, temporary name is Shark of Hearts, SoH for short. Or TTSVN, The Tsundere Sharks Visual Novel. Either works. Our theme does need to be blue, and since it is a comedy, a light blue will work better I think. I started out using Editra, but quickly found out it is very simple (too simple), and jEdit will be better for the game. I think for the boxes, the "A bit more fancy like this" looks the best. I want it to look custom, but also clean- I don't want any buttons on the bottom except for maybe a load and save, the rest can go in the game menu. No portraits as in the "simple" example. The "more fancy" is just too much, imo.

Chihaya Ohtori from Rewrite. Mild tsundere, complete baka.
Anyhow, I'll try to throw together a concept sometime next weekend. Question: What's better- bubbles, seaweed, or shells? Or maybe ribbons or shark fins?

The step forward/backwards buttons wouldn't fit in the menu but those aren't necessary at all since that's what the keyboard is for. If you mean borders to the UI objects then I think it'd be better to make sure they're not too blue in case they blend in too much with the background when the scene is set "outside" Mentioning ribbons gave me an idea. I assume not all of the sharks will wear ribbons, it would be possible have maybe a ribbon/other ornament on the corner of the text box depending on whose path you're following, or maybe just who you're talking to.

That's actually a really good idea. I actually had a list of possible ornaments such as "hair"clips to draw on to the sharks to differentiate them better: seashells, starfish, fish/fishbones, jellyfish, etc.

A suitable border would be the inside of scuba goggles, though it might be hard to make that unobtrusive.

I've been experimenting with the UI options in ren'py and since most of it is done already, it seems like most of the programming of it will just be plugging screen coordinates for the objects. I'll see what else might be needed from a programming perspective but for now I think it's a job the artists Things like ribbons on the text box for specific characters looks straight forward as well, it's just a matter of adding a few words to the ren'py character definition. A suitable border would be the inside of scuba goggles, though it might be hard to make that unobtrusive. The nose part of it does seem like it'd be intrusive. It might work for the name box or an object that doesn't need words in it like the cursor or the flashing "continue" arrow at the bottom right.

Well, on the topic of border, it could be pink, with some bubbles and ribbons and all kinds of "kawaii" stuff, or just stuff you would link to japanese schoolgirls (just too add in to the jokingly design). The scuba goggles are a great idea though

I've been wanting to learn Ryn'py for a while. Do any of you guys know a good place to find tutorials? If I could help a little bit on the tech end that'd be cool.

Download Ren'py. It comes with a tutorial. I also remember finding the documentation online somewhere, so that might be helpful.
