So, it might be a bit early, but do we want to draw characters for this, or to have real sharks with exaggerated features? I'm personally for the exaggerated features type over the drawing.

real sharks would certainly be the easiest/quickest route. But drawn ones would probably have more charm. The sharks could be 'cuter' if they're drawn.
Backgrounds could be real pictures too. That's what Katawa Shoujo did, and it's not bad.

I'm casting my vote for drawn sharks. Not like a furry though :/ Any thing like this would be nice. That would be niiiice.

Here's how I see them
Photographs: + Easier / Faster to make + More true to the sub - Possible copyright issues on the original photos? - Less freedom for poses / actions
Drawings: + Completely customisable - More effort to create - Completely at the whim of whatever artists you can find to do free work on the internet (hint: this bit can be hard)
Despite drawing myself, I'd highly recommend the photoshop option. One person could easily smash out 4-6 emotions for 4-6 characters in a day and that eliminates one huge challenge in making a VN.

That was drawn by me as bait to attract all you baka scuba-kuns. ^_^ I am okay with continuing to draw sprites, so we won't have to worry about copyright issues. I would love some help though, as that sprite took me a good ~7ish hours to finish(Granted, I've never really drawn many sharks before and I had to fiddle with proportions A LOT, so I'll probably improve as I draw more). Note: I'm currently using Inkscape to draw the sprites. I think that vectoring(Illustrator works too) will probably make sprites much more customizable for the different expressions we need. It really depends on what the artist prefers himself. Photoshop/rastering works as well, but if you choose to raster, make sure you layer EVERYTHING otherwise it will be a lot harder to customize sprites. What I would really <3 love <3 is a background artist. I'm not too keen on using images we find off google as backgrounds, and unless someone is going scuba-diving sometime soon, I doubt we will be able to take quality pictures of the ocean. Hence, the need for a background artist. Otherwise, I guess I could throw something together in MS Paint. Nope. Edit: spelling.

Just throw a paint filter over the images we find and it'll be fine as long as they aren't copyrighted. Google images allows for searching images labeled for reuse with modification after all. I agree with using vectored sprites (SVG?) when sharing works, then export as PNG for the full release (not too sure if renpy can work with vectors). I've worked with Illustrator for two years but have never touched inkscape. In this I see a problem; Illy doesn't seem to like SVGs. Sometimes gradients and other nuances don't translate properly, so I can't help much if the vectors get too complicated. Complexity is not a problem unless there are 500+ translucent objects. The biggest problem with collaborating are styles, especially with Photoshop. For me, drawing styles become more pronounced in raster works :/ BTW igfod13, can I have the SVG for that image? I'd love that as a background

Here ya go. Removed the blur effects for the Illustrator port. I've transferred stuff from Inkscape to Illustrator before (and vice versa), and problems usually only arise if you use specific effects(blurs, clipping), or if you don't save as a plain SVG beforehand. Gradients usually transfer over without issues. Just don't try copy-pasting from Inkscape, because that won't work. I once tried vectoring a realistic background for an image. Luckily, I gave up pretty quickly. The lag was beyond awful. That's my backup. Attachments:sharknyan.svg (168.66 KB)

I know a few artists that I will talk to, and even try drawing somethings out myself (if I ever find my darn tablet..)and I vote for the drawn sharks.

Your last link is broken. I started looking at a bunch of images in the middle of vectoring because my shark started to look really weird, and I did realize that the upper part of most tiger sharks shark (above the fin) is more triangular than round. I didn't feel the need to change it though because it still looked cute. Protip: Another thing I noticed was that the fins are actually really low on the body, and the body does not curve up until a good distance above the fins. As far as proportions go, I'm for drawing whatever makes the shark the most kawaii, and not necessarily the most accurate. I'm not entirely sure what that entails, so that's something to experiment with. Also, I'm thinking there will be three main shark poses. One like the one I drew (slightly angled), one direct front view, and one angled across( Excuse the quick sketch), with each one having multiple expressions. Minor characters may only have one view, or no sprite at all.

So I was inspired by igfod13's shark-nyan to try and attempt to create a chibi of a shark. I really wanted to try this because I was curious- what exactly would a chibi shark look like? I decided to try, using Shark-nyan as a reference. But I didn't realize that Shark-nyan is based off a tiger shark, and used a white tip shark as a reference. Oops. The results: This was just a quick and dirty sketch, I would like to continue to work on this- maybe redrawing the chibi using a tiger shark as a reference.
